Every Sunday from 10am to 2pm, Houston’s East End is filled with people walking up and down the Navigation Esplanade for its weekly street market. The East End Street Market blends food, shopping, and culture to create an experience that is rooted in one of Houston’s most historic communities. It was during one of those Sunday strolls that I came across Tierra de los Artesanos, a marketplace for the ethically savvy shopper.
The first thing that caught my eye, was the array of colors coming from their tent. Brightly colored shirts with tassels, beautifully handcrafted clutches, and custom designed jewelry! I talked to the owners behind the Mexican-inspired goods and they told me a little about themselves and their brand.
Tierra de lo Artesanos’ mission is simple: Create economic empowerment for Mexican Artisans in Mexico as well as immigrant artisans living in the U.S. What does this mean? Each time you shop, you’re supporting someone fulfill their dreams!!
Yvonne Mendoza, Founder of Tierra de los Artesanos, is the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Yvonne credits her upbringing and education from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work for much of her inspiration. Her belief is simple, she says people have a skill set worth showing, investing in, and growing.
Carol Mendoza-Leon, Visual Manger for Tierra de los Artesanos, mainly focuses on practices and environmentally safe creations with the artisans. Her extensive travels through Mexico, Central, and South America gives her extraordinary attention to detail, colors, fabrics, and textures are all inspired by the Mexican beauty that hides behind the hands of artisans showcasing the heart of Mexico.
That’s why this purchase meant so much to me. There something special about being an ethically savvy shopper! Every time I wear this shirt, I’ll know that it stands for something, I’ll know that I helped someone.
